Commuters and residents in Sydney's rapidly growing North West region can look forward to smoother, safer, and quicker journeys, with $1.1 billion of major road upgrades moving into the next stages of development.

Bandon Road Upgrade Advances
The much-anticipated Bandon Road project has reached a key milestone, with a contract now awarded to Arup Australia for essential design work. New artist impressions highlight features such as improved intersection safety, a dedicated car park at Vineyard Train Station, and a new bus stop. Eventually, the upgrade will introduce two additional lanes and a rail underpass, significantly reducing congestion caused by frequent rail crossing closures.
Community members will have their say on these plans from Monday 24 March to Sunday 6 April.
Richmond Road Expansion on the Horizon
Progress continues on the Richmond Road upgrade, with tenders requested for the design and construction phase of this significant project. A 2.2-kilometre stretch between the M7 and Townson Road at Marsden Park will expand from four to six lanes, including a new flyover bridge connecting the M7 Motorway's Rooty Hill Road North off-ramp directly to Richmond Road northbound. Early construction works are set to begin in the first half of 2026.

Garfield Road East Project Moves Forward
Garfield Road East is also set for substantial enhancements. A design contract will be awarded soon, featuring upgrades at the Piccadilly Street intersection. This project will see the existing two-lane road widened to four lanes across a 3.4-kilometre section between Piccadilly Street in Riverstone and Windsor Road in Grantham Farm.
Supporting Population Growth
These infrastructure improvements come as Sydney's North West braces for considerable growth. The region's population is expected to rise by around 300,000 people, reaching approximately 1.1 million by 2036. The collaborative investment from the Albanese and Minns Labor Governments aims to ensure the area's road network supports this expansion efficiently.

Government Commitment
Minister Catherine King emphasized the importance of these upgrades, stating, "The north west of Sydney is growing quickly, and the Australian Government is supporting that growth with our $555 million contribution to these projects."
Premier Chris Minns added, "We are committed to ensuring these communities have the roads they need to support them now and into the future."
Deputy Premier Prue Car highlighted the urgency of these developments: "Upgrading these roads is vital to keeping our community in North West Sydney moving."
Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison reinforced the government's commitment, noting that these upgrades reflect long-awaited infrastructure improvements to enhance the daily lives of Western Sydney residents.
Local Benefits
State Member for Riverstone, Warren Kirby, detailed the benefits, particularly emphasizing improved traffic flow and safety with the removal of the existing rail level crossing and realignment of flood evacuation routes. An off-road shared path for walking and cycling is also planned, enhancing community connectivity.
Residents in North West Sydney can soon enjoy these significant road improvements, marking a major step towards easing traffic congestion and providing safer journeys across the region.
