Chinese automaker Dongfeng is set to launch the M-Hero 917 'Dragon Armour Edition', a rugged electric SUV inspired by military vehicles. This high-powered, off-road capable EV is scheduled for release in China on September 24, showcasing Dongfeng's ambition in the premium electric off-road segment.
The M-Hero 917 'Dragon Armour Edition' is priced between 768,000 to 868,000 yuan ($158,858 to $179,530). It features an 800kW fully-electric four-wheel drive powertrain. The design draws inspiration from vehicles like the Ford Bronco Raptor and Hummer. Over 20% of the exterior is made of carbon fiber.
It comes in a "desert storm military yellow" color with a contrasting silver roof. The interior boasts a triple screen configuration and premium features. Two powertrain options are available: a fully electric version and a range extender hybrid.
The electric version has a range of 505km (CLTC), while the hybrid can travel up to 1032km. Dongfeng has a history of producing military vehicles for the Chinese army. The vehicle has been tested in Europe and the Middle East, but Australian availability is uncertain.
The Dongfeng M-Hero 917 'Dragon Armour Edition' represents a bold entry into the high-end electric off-road SUV market. While its military-inspired design and impressive specifications are sure to attract attention, its success will depend on how well it performs in real-world conditions and whether it can compete with established players in the premium SUV segment.
