MG is expanding its lineup in Australia with the introduction of its first-ever seven-seat SUV, the 2025 MG QS. Expected to hit showrooms by mid-2025, the new model has been revealed in government filings, giving Australian buyers a sneak peek at what’s to come.
MG’s Biggest SUV Yet
The MG QS will be the brand’s largest SUV to date, surpassing the HS and ZS models in size. Measuring 4983mm in length, 1967mm in width, and 1788mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2915mm, it’s slightly bigger than the Toyota Kluger but smaller than the discontinued Mazda CX-9.
The QS is based on the Roewe RX9, a seven-seater SUV sold in China, but carries MG badging and branding to cater to international markets.

Engine and Performance
The QS will launch with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 153kW of power, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. This output is slightly lower than the 178kW/392Nm figure quoted for the Roewe RX9 in China, but aligns with the MG RX9 available in Middle Eastern markets.
A plug-in hybrid variant is also in the works, although specific details are yet to be confirmed. This hybrid option is expected to appeal to Australian buyers looking for a more fuel-efficient alternative in the growing large SUV segment.
Trim Levels and Features
Government filings list two petrol variants:
- COM (Front-Wheel Drive) with 20-inch wheels
- DEL (All-Wheel Drive) with 20- or 21-inch wheels
Following MG’s traditional lineup structure, the QS is expected to be offered in three grades: Vibe (entry-level), Excite (mid-range), and Essence (flagship).
Overseas models of the Roewe RX9 suggest that the QS could come packed with premium features, including:
- Leather upholstery
- Power-adjustable heated and ventilated seats in the first and second rows
- Adaptive suspension
- 12-speaker Bose sound system
- Three-zone climate control
- Full suite of advanced safety features

Competition and Market Positioning
The MG QS will enter the competitive seven-seat SUV market, taking on rivals like the Toyota Kluger, Kia Sorento, and Hyundai Santa Fe. However, MG is likely to undercut these competitors on price while still offering a well-equipped package, following the brand’s strategy of affordability and value.
Australian Release Timeline
The MG QS is expected to arrive in Australian showrooms by mid-2025, with an official debut possibly taking place at the Melbourne Motor Show in April. MG has also announced plans to expand its lineup, with more new models set to be revealed later in the year.
With its combination of size, technology, and expected affordability, the 2025 MG QS is poised to be a strong contender in the Australian large SUV segment.
