Mahindra's highly anticipated next-generation "global pickup" has been caught on camera during testing, offering a first look at its design language. Heavily inspired by the current-generation Scorpio SUV, the all-new ute is poised to replace the existing Pik-Up in the Australian market by mid-2026.
Scorpio Styling Takes Center Stage
Spy footage captured a single-cab version of the Pik-Up, completely swathed in camouflage. However, even with the disguise, the ute's resemblance to the Scorpio is unmistakable.
Sharing the same squared-off front end, the Pik-Up features six vertical chrome slats on a narrow grille, an identical lower honeycomb grille section, and the same fog lights as its three-row SUV sibling.
Mahindra first debuted this distinctive design language in 2022 with the Scorpio's launch, and it's now clearly becoming a signature element of the brand's identity.
Utilitarian Design Meets Modern Styling
Beyond the front doors, the spied Pik-Up showcases a long tray that extends significantly beyond the rear axle, creating a sizable rear overhang. This design choice suggests a focus on maximizing load-carrying capacity and practicality.
A utilitarian rear 'sports' bar is also fitted, adding to the ute's rugged aesthetic. Interestingly, the front doors appear somewhat short in proportion, suggesting that the design may still be in the early stages of development and subject to further refinement.
Confirmed Australian Arrival
Mahindra has officially confirmed its plans to launch this new-generation global ute in 2025, with an Australian release expected by mid-2026. This arrival marks a significant step for Mahindra in the Australian market, as the all-new model will replace the current Pik-Up, which has been available in Australia since 2018.
The new Pik-Up promises a significant upgrade in terms of design, technology, and performance, positioning it as a more competitive offering in the highly contested ute segment.
Powertrain Expectations
While the current Mahindra Pik-Up relies on a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 103kW of power and 320Nm of torque, expectations are high for the next-generation model to deliver a substantial performance boost.
The new Pik-Up is widely expected to utilize an upgraded version of the Scorpio's 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel, with a targeted output of at least 450Nm of torque. This upgraded engine will be mated to an Aisin-sourced six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel drive system, ensuring capable off-road performance.
Despite speculation, Mahindra has ruled out alternative V6 diesel, hybrid, and electric powertrains for the initial launch, suggesting a focus on proven and reliable technology.
Enhanced Chassis and Capabilities
The next-generation Mahindra ute will be built on a completely new chassis, featuring a different wheelbase, altered overhangs, and a revised suspension architecture. These changes are aimed at improving the ute's overall driving dynamics, load-carrying capabilities, and off-road prowess.
Mahindra is setting its sights on a 3500kg towing capacity, placing the new Pik-Up on par with segment leaders such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, and Mitsubishi Triton, solidifying its position as a serious contender in the ute market.
Current Pik-Up's Future
The introduction of the new ute in global markets does not necessarily spell the end for the current Pik-Up, which is likely to remain in production to cater to the Indian market. This strategy allows Mahindra to offer a range of ute options, catering to different market needs and price points.
