Suzuki has temporarily halted orders for the Suzuki Jimny five-door in Japan after receiving an overwhelming 50,000 orders in just four days. The off-road mini SUV, known as the Jimny XL in Australia, has been immensely popular since its debut in late 2023, with strong demand in India, South Africa, and Australia.

Unprecedented Demand Halts Sales

Suzuki officially launched the five-door Jimny in Japan on January 30, 2025. However, due to extraordinary demand, the company stopped accepting new orders just five days later.

“Thank you very much for considering our products. The Jimny Nomade has been very well received by many customers, and we have received orders far exceeding our production capacity,” Suzuki announced on its Japanese website.

Production Challenges and Wait Times

The Jimny five-door is currently manufactured in India, with the production plant capable of assembling only 1,200 units per month. With the massive backlog of 50,000 orders, production at the current pace would take nearly four years to fulfill all requests.

Suzuki has yet to announce when it will resume orders for the model but has assured customers it is monitoring production capacity and will provide updates accordingly.

Jimny XL in Australia

The Suzuki Jimny XL has been available in Australia since December 2023, where it has become one of the most sought-after small off-roaders. Demand remains high, with reports of longer wait times as production struggles to keep up.

Suzuki Australia’s general manager of automobiles, Michael Pachota, confirmed that local supply remains a priority but could be impacted by increasing international demand. “I pushed for it very hard to be able to rob my future [Jimny XL] supply and give [overseas markets] a better future supply based on their launch dates,” Pachota said in June 2024.

What’s Next for the Suzuki Jimny Five-Door?

The Suzuki Jimny Nomade (as it is named in Japan) features the same 1.5L petrol engine (75kW/130Nm) found in the three-door Jimny Sierra, along with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. It has been well-received for its compact size, off-road capabilities, and affordability compared to larger SUVs.

For now, Japanese customers will have to wait for further updates from Suzuki regarding order resumption. Meanwhile, Australian and global demand for the Jimny XL continues to grow, making it one of the most anticipated compact off-roaders worldwide.

The Suzuki Jimny was Suzuki’s best-selling model in Australia in 2024, with 9,697 deliveries, marking a 94% increase over 2023. It was the second-best-selling light SUV behind the Mazda CX-3 (18,461 units) but ahead of competitors like the Toyota Yaris Cross (8,206) and Hyundai Venue (6,949).

Suzuki’s future focus will likely be on increasing production capacity to meet the soaring global demand for the Jimny five-door, ensuring customers worldwide get a chance to own this popular off-road SUV.
