Advanced Traffic Cameras Can Issue Fines for More Than Just Speeding and Texting

Australian Road Safety Cameras Now Checking Registration Status

We all know that speeding, using phones while driving or running red lights will attract the attention of road safety cameras. But in Australia’s capital, these cameras are now keeping an eye out for something else. As of August 27, road safety cameras in the Australian Capital Territory have an additional duty. Beyond monitoring for typical traffic offences, they are also checking if the vehicle’s registration is valid.

Beware Of Heavier Fines

If you commit any of the above offences while your registration is expired, be prepared for a heavier hit to your wallet. An additional fine of $700 will be added in these cases. This is a significant increase so make sure your vehicle registration is always up to date before hitting the road.

Registration Renewal Made Easy

According to the ACT Government, majority of the vehicles’ registrations can be easily renewed online. This holds true even for registrations that have been unregistered for up to 12 months. If the registration has been lapsed for more than 12 months however, a roadworthy inspection will be necessary for renewal.

The government emphasizes that vehicle registration is not just a legal requirement, but is also crucial to ensure road safety. A valid registration and insurance protect the driver from personal liability in case of injuries to self or others.

ACT Camera Network: Ensuring Safety Across the Territory

The ACT camera network includes the following:

  • 13 fixed red light/speed cameras
  • 13 fixed speed cameras at 9 locations
  • 1 point-to-point speed camera
  • 3 transportable mobile device detection cameras
  • 2 fixed mobile device detection cameras.

Additionally, there are 10 mobile speed camera vans that can be stationed at over 900 locations within the territory. This extensive arrangement ensures that residents and visitors alike adhere to traffic rules and regulations, fostering safe and responsible driving habits.
