BYD has announced that its highly anticipated Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute will be available for order in Australia from September 24, 2024, beating Ford's Ranger PHEV to market. This move positions BYD as a pioneer in the electrified ute segment in Australia.
The BYD Shark 6 will be available for order from September 24, 2024. It features a plug-in hybrid powertrain with 321kW of power and 650Nm of torque. The ute offers an electric-only range of about 100km and a total range of 800km. Pricing is expected to start around $60,000, positioning it competitively in the market.
The Shark 6 will arrive before the Ford Ranger PHEV, which is due in early 2025. It comes with advanced features like a 15.6-inch infotainment screen and heated/ventilated seats. The ute has a towing capacity of 2500kg and a payload of 790kg. BYD is targeting a five-star ANCAP safety rating for the Shark 6.
The vehicle will initially be offered in a single 'Premium' trim level. BYD aims to challenge established players in the ute market with this new offering.
With the Shark 6, BYD is set to disrupt the Australian ute market by offering a plug-in hybrid option before established competitors. Its combination of performance, technology, and competitive pricing could make it an attractive alternative for buyers looking to transition to electrified vehicles in the popular ute segment.
