BYD has set a new benchmark in Australia’s electric vehicle (EV) market, becoming the first manufacturer to offer an EV with a starting price below $30,000. Is this going to be the best BYD Electric Car?
This game-changing announcement introduces more affordable ‘Essential’ versions of the BYD Dolphin and Atto 3 models, lowering the price of entry for environmentally conscious drivers.
Affordable Electric Driving for All
The BYD Dolphin Essential starts at just $29,990 plus on-road costs, making it the first EV in Australia to break the $30,000 barrier. The BYD Atto 3 Essential follows at $39,990 plus on-road costs, providing a cost-effective alternative in the electric SUV segment.
These reductions bring the Dolphin down by $6900 compared to the outgoing Dynamic model and the Atto 3 down by $4509.
Despite fewer premium features, both models retain their impressive range capabilities, boasting 340km for the Dolphin and 345km for the Atto 3 under WLTP standards.
How BYD Achieved the Price Cuts
The Dolphin Essential has seen adjustments to reduce costs, including:
- Removing the panoramic glass roof.
- Swapping power-folding mirrors for manual alternatives.
- Deleting wireless phone charging, privacy glass, and heated seats.
Similarly, the Atto 3 Essential achieves its lower price by:
- Opting for 17-inch wheels instead of 18-inch.
- Replacing the 15.6-inch touchscreen with a smaller 12.8-inch display.
- Removing the panoramic sunroof, power tailgate, and heated seats.
These changes ensure that affordability is prioritised without compromising key driving features or performance.
Performance Specs Remain Unchanged
The Dolphin Essential continues with its 70kW/180Nm electric motor paired with a 44.9kWh battery, offering a competitive range of 340km. Meanwhile, the Atto 3 Essential features a more robust 150kW/310Nm motor and a 49.9kWh battery, ensuring a smooth and efficient drive for up to 345km on a single charge.
BYD Dolphin vs. Competitors
The Dolphin Essential edges out competitors like the MG 4 Excite 51 and is set to reshape the EV landscape. However, it’s worth noting that on-road costs could push its final price just over the $30,000 mark, depending on location.
Affordable Electric SUVs: Atto 3 Takes the Lead
With the MG ZS EV exiting the market, the BYD Atto 3 Essential becomes Australia’s most affordable electric SUV. It undercuts the Chery Omoda E5 BX priced at $42,990, making it an attractive option for families seeking an economical EV.
Availability and Delivery
Orders for the Dolphin Essential and Atto 3 Essential open on Monday, 13 January, with first deliveries expected in March 2025.
