BYD is set to introduce its first plug-in hybrid vehicle to the Australian market with the launch of the Shark 6 PHEV ute. This move marks a significant step for the Chinese automaker as it expands its electric and hybrid offerings in the competitive Australian automotive landscape.
The BYD Shark 6 PHEV ute will be available for order in Australia from October 29, 2024. Orders can be placed online and through BYD's dealership network.
Pricing details will be announced on the launch date, but a government website previously indicated a possible starting price of $68,000 before on-road costs. The Shark 6 features a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors.
Total system output is 320kW, with a 170kW/310Nm front motor and a 150kW/340Nm rear motor. Electric-only range is claimed to be 100km on the NEDC cycle, with a combined range of 850km.
Fuel consumption is stated as low as 1.5 litres per 100km with a charged battery. Dimensions: 5457mm long, 1971mm wide, 1925mm tall, with a 3260mm wheelbase. Payload capacity is 835kg, with a 1450-litre rear tray and 2500kg braked towing capacity.
The Shark 6 will compete with upcoming PHEV utes like the Ford Ranger PHEV and GWM Cannon Alpha Hi4-T.
The launch of the BYD Shark 6 PHEV ute represents a significant addition to Australia's growing electrified vehicle market. With its competitive specifications and pricing, it aims to challenge established players in the ute segment while offering consumers a more environmentally friendly option.
