General Motors has issued a recall for certain 2019-2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 models due to potential anti-lock brake system (ABS) malfunctions related to incompatible spare tires. This recall, along with a separate airbag deployment issue in some 2022 models, highlights ongoing safety concerns for the popular pickup truck.
General Motors (GM) is recalling certain 2019-2021 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vehicles equipped with specific accessory road tires and a 17" spare tire. The issue is that the 17" spare tire provided with the vehicle is not compatible for use with the accessory wheels, which can cause the anti-lock brake system (ABS) to not function properly under certain conditions.
An ABS system that does not function properly can increase the risk of a crash. For the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, there was a separate recall where the sensing diagnostic module (SDM) was left in manufacturing mode and not activated at the assembly plant prior to shipment. This could result in the airbags not deploying in a crash.
There have been multiple other recalls for various Silverado models over the years, addressing issues such as brake pipes, hydro-boost relief valves, exterior lighting, and seat belt tensioners.
For the 2024 model year, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 received some updates, including a new active performance exhaust and a price increase. The base model now starts at $130,500 before on-road costs.
The top-spec 2024 ZR2 model starts from $138,000 and gains features like a rear-view camera mirror, a 15-inch head-up display, and adaptive cruise control.
While these recalls address significant safety issues, Chevrolet continues to update and improve the Silverado lineup. The 2024 model year brings new features and enhancements, demonstrating the brand's commitment to evolving its flagship pickup despite facing occasional setbacks.
