The Xpeng G6, a new electric SUV from Chinese automaker Xpeng, has been unveiled with a distinctive safety feature designed to assist occupants in escaping a sinking vehicle. This innovation sets the G6 apart in the competitive electric SUV market, where it aims to challenge the Tesla Model Y.
The Xpeng G6 is positioned as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y in the Chinese market. It features a unique "Escape from Water" mode, activated when the vehicle detects it's submerged. This mode automatically lowers all windows and opens the sunroof to equalize pressure and allow escape.
The G6 is built on Xpeng's new SEPA 2.0 architecture, promising improved performance and efficiency. It offers up to 755km of range on China's CLTC cycle, surpassing the Model Y's claimed 542km. The G6 can charge from 10-80 percent in just 20 minutes using an 800V charging system.
Pricing in China starts from 209,900 yuan (A$45,000) for the base model.
The SUV features advanced driver assistance systems and a large central touchscreen. Xpeng plans to expand into international markets, potentially bringing the G6 to compete globally. The "Escape from Water" feature addresses a niche but potentially life-saving scenario.
While the likelihood of needing to escape a sinking car is low, Xpeng's innovative approach to safety demonstrates the company's commitment to differentiation in a crowded market. As Chinese automakers continue to push boundaries in electric vehicle technology and features, established players like Tesla may face increasing competition both domestically and internationally.
