Double demerit points will be in effect for drivers in New South Wales (NSW) and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) during the upcoming Labour Day long weekend. This increased penalty period aims to enhance road safety during a time of increased traffic.
- Duration: Double demerits will be enforced from midnight (12:00 am) on October 4 to 11:59 pm on October 7, 2024.
- Affected Areas: NSW and ACT
- Targeted Offenses:
- Speeding
- Illegal use of mobile phones
- Not wearing seatbelts
- Riding without a motorcycle helmet
- Penalties: While fines remain the same, demerit points are doubled for these offenses. For example, using a mobile phone while driving will incur a $410 fine and 10 demerit points.
- Additional ACT Measure: In the ACT, an extra demerit point will be added for minor offenses like failing to keep left.
Other States:
- Queensland enforces double demerits year-round for repeat offenders within a 12-month period.
- Victoria, Western Australia, and Tasmania do not have public holidays this weekend and will not enforce double demerits.
Police Operation:
NSW Police will conduct 'Operation Labour Day 2024', targeting drink- and drug-driving, fatigue, mobile phone use, speeding, and seatbelt/helmet offenses.
Safety Reminder:
The National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA) advises drivers to exercise caution, especially in school zones where additional penalties may apply.
Authorities urge motorists to prioritize safety, plan their trips, and avoid risky behaviors to ensure a safe long weekend for all road users.
