BYD Unveils Ruggedly Stylish, Off-Road Electric Vehicle: Fang Cheng Bao 3
Chinese automotive titan BYD is getting ready to unveil what may be one of its most appealing electric vehicles (EV) under its off-road centric sub-brand.
First Glimpse of the Fang Cheng Bao 3
Unveiled without a hint of camouflage, the Fang Cheng Bao 3 gives us a taste of what to expect from this Toyota RAV4-sized EV. Fang Cheng Bao is a BYD sub-brand that emphasizes rugged models with generous ground clearance and solid, boxy profiles, as exemplified by the forthcoming Bao 3.
Power and Performance
The Bao 3 differs from its larger, plug-in hybrid sibling, the Bao 5, by being a pure EV. It sports a 110kW motor powering the front axle, and a 220kW unit driving the rear, delivering a combined 330kW. This power setup promises a blistering sub-5.0 second 0-100km/h time.
Battery and Range
Equipped with a 78.72kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the Bao 3 offers up to 510km of range as per China’s lenient CLTC lab test.
Size and Design
The Bao 3, measuring 4605mm long, 1900mm wide, and 1720mm tall on a 2745mm wheelbase, is a tad shorter but wider than the Toyota RAV4. Its exterior design, heavily influenced by the Super 3 concept unveiled earlier this year, features boxy wheel arches, sleek lights at both ends, integrated roof rails, and a spare tire carrier.
Interior Features
The interior of the Bao 3 offers an intriguing blend of modern tech and traditional design. The cabin is home to an aircraft-style push-type gear selector, a row of control buttons, a large floating infotainment touchscreen, and a smaller digital instrument cluster ahead of the four-spoke steering wheel.
Final Comments
While neither BYD nor EVDirect, BYD’s Australian distributor, have announced plans to launch the Fang Cheng Bao brand in local showrooms, we’re keenly awaiting any updates. The Bao 3, with its rugged style and impressive performance, is sure to make a splash in the EV market.
