Toyota C-HR Hybrid Owners Get Relief for Reversing Issue
In an effort to ensure complete customer satisfaction, Toyota Australia has initiated a ‘Customer Service Exercise’ for its popular model, the C-HR hybrid SUV. This move comes after acknowledging an issue affecting 2348 vehicles – a glitch that could cause the parking brake to engage unexpectedly when reversing.
What is the Problem?
The issue arises when the C-HR is towing additional weight, such as a trailer or bicycle rack. The Parking Support Brake (PKSB) system may activate unintentionally when the vehicle is put into reverse. Toyota’s internal investigation found that the PKSB software defaults to the ON state when reverse gear is selected. This could result in the PKSB system activating the vehicle brakes when the shift position is moved into reverse, a scenario attributed to the software logic of PKSB.
The affected Toyota C-HR units, totaling 2348, were manufactured between May 2, 2023, and May 30, 2024.
A comprehensive list of impacted models and their respective VINs has been compiled and made available to customers.
Action from Toyota
Toyota’s response to this issue has been proactive, even though it doesn’t officially classify as a recall. The company is voluntarily addressing the issue and will soon be reaching out to the owners of the affected vehicles.
Toyota will rectify the problem at its service centers by affixing a correction sticker to the owner’s manual and performing a software update to the Clearance Warning ECU on the involved vehicles. The entire process should take approximately 60 minutes.
