The Australian launch of the Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will take place closer to the middle of 2025 than the start, which means it could be beaten to market by not one but two rival utes.
Ford Australia has confirmed the Ranger PHEV is due to arrive in mid-2025, after initially saying it'd be here early in the new year. It's already been beaten by the BYD Shark 6 to become the first PHEV ute in Australia, while the GWM Cannon Alpha Hi4-T is due in the second quarter of 2025 (April to June), likely arriving a handful of weeks or even months ahead of the Ford.
The Ranger PHEV will feature a 2.3-liter EcoBoost petrol engine combined with a 75kW electric motor and an 11.8kWh battery. Ford is targeting an electric-only range of 45km and promises to maintain the 3500kg towing capacity of its diesel counterparts.Key features of the Ranger PHEV include:
- Four-wheel drive with high- and low-range gearing
- Locking rear differential
- Multiple drive modes including EV Now, EV Later, and EV Charge
- Pro Power Onboard feature for powering tools and appliances
The Ranger PHEV will be available in XLT, Sport, and Wildtrak grades, as well as a limited-edition Stormtrak launch model. While pricing hasn't been announced, it's expected to command a premium over the diesel variants.
Despite the delay, Ford Australia remains confident in the Ranger PHEV's potential, emphasizing its capability and the retention of key Ranger attributes that have made it popular in the Australian market.
