Chinese automaker Geely, a global powerhouse behind brands like Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus, is making strides into the Australian market.
Among its anticipated offerings is the Radar RD6, a dual-cab electric ute poised to compete in Australia’s highly competitive utility vehicle segment.
Geely’s Big Plans for Australia
Geely’s entry into Australia begins in 2025 with the launch of the EX5, a mid-sized electric SUV.
However, the company has confirmed that its long-term strategy includes introducing a ute to the market, aligning with Australia’s significant demand for light commercial vehicles, which accounted for nearly 20% of new vehicle sales in 2023.
According to Geely Auto vice-president Michael Song, Australia’s strong pickup truck market makes it a natural fit for the RD6.
“We have already made strategic plans regarding pickup trucks, and it’s not just about BEV (battery electric vehicle) trucks – we have also planned for diversified energy solutions,” Song stated.
The Radar RD6: What We Know
The Radar RD6, also known as the Riddara RD6 in some markets, has already launched in right-hand-drive markets like Thailand.
Here’s what we know about its specifications:
- Powertrains: Single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations.
- Performance: The single motor produces 200kW of power and 384Nm of torque.
Battery Options:
- 63kWh battery with a range of 385km (CLTC cycle).
- 86kWh battery offering up to 517km of range (CLTC cycle).
Charging: Both configurations are expected to offer fast charging, though exact details for Australia are yet to be confirmed.
If the RD6 heads to Australia, it’s likely the AWD version with the larger battery pack will be the flagship model.
Competing in a Dynamic Market
The Australian ute market is undergoing significant transformation, with the rise of hybrid and electric models alongside traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) options.
Geely’s RD6 will face competition from established players like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, as well as newer entrants like the BYD Shark 6 and LDV’s eT60 and eTerron 9 electric utes.
Geely has also hinted that its offerings will be tailored specifically for Australian conditions. This includes localized suspension and advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) tuning, which the company is already implementing for the EX5 SUV.
Why the RD6 Matters
The Radar RD6 represents a shift in the utility vehicle segment, combining practicality with sustainability.
Its electric powertrains, competitive range, and advanced features make it a strong contender for eco-conscious buyers who still need the capability of a ute.
Geely’s Broader Vision
Geely isn’t just focused on EVs.
The company has hinted at a diversified approach, potentially introducing hybrid and plug-in hybrid utes to cater to varying market demands.
This aligns with global trends and Australia’s increasing appetite for low-emission vehicles.
What’s Next for Geely in Australia?
Geely’s EX5 SUV will set the stage for the brand’s official launch in 2025, with the RD6 likely following soon after.
The EX5, expected to rival the Tesla Model Y and BYD Atto 3, will give Australian consumers a taste of Geely’s design, technology, and pricing strategy.
While Geely has not officially announced RD6 pricing or launch dates, its arrival is highly anticipated.
With its innovative design, advanced technology, and focus on regional adaptation, the RD6 is set to shake up the Australian ute market.
Stay tuned for updates as Geely reveals more about its plans for the Radar RD6 and other exciting models heading to Australia.
