Genesis Australia has recalled 572 electric vehicles (EVs) across the GV60, Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80 model lines, due to a shared fault which can lead to a loss of power."
Due to a software issue in the Integrated Charging Control Unit, the auxiliary 12-volt battery may not charge as intended, resulting in battery drainage and loss of motive power," the carmaker said in its recall notice."
A loss of motive power whilst driving could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users."This recall is part of a broader global campaign affecting Hyundai Motor Group's electric vehicles.
In total, the group has recalled approximately 208,000 EVs in the United States alone, including models from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands.
Affected Models and Details
The Genesis recall in Australia affects 572 vehicles built between 2021 and 2024. The affected models include:
- Genesis GV60
- Genesis Electrified GV70
- Genesis Electrified G80
Globally, the recall extends to additional models:
- 2022-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5
- 2023-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6
- 2023-2025 Kia EV6
The Issue Explained
The problem stems from a software issue in the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU). This component may become damaged and stop charging the 12-volt battery, which powers various auxiliary systems in the vehicle. If the 12-volt battery drains, it can result in a loss of drive power.
According to Hyundai Motor America, if the condition occurs, drivers may notice a series of audible and visual warnings in the instrument cluster. The vehicle will then enter a "fail-safe" mode that gradually reduces propulsion power from the motors over time, estimated to last up to 45 minutes. Other systems such as braking and power steering remain operable during this time.
Safety Implications
The sudden loss of power while driving poses a significant safety risk, potentially leading to accidents. While Hyundai has reported no injuries or crashes related to this issue, it has acknowledged 675 incidents of the event occurring.
Recall Response and Remedy
Genesis Australia is requesting affected vehicle owners to schedule an appointment with an authorized Genesis dealership. The remedy involves:
- Inspection of the ICCU
- Replacement of the ICCU and its fuse, if necessary
- A software update for the ICCU
All repairs will be performed free of charge. Similar procedures will be followed for Hyundai and Kia vehicles affected by the recall in other markets.
Timeline and Notifications
In the United States, Hyundai and Genesis owners can expect notification by mail as early as January 15, 2025. Australian owners should receive similar notifications, though specific dates may vary.
Broader Context
This recall builds upon an earlier recall from March 2024, which affected 99,055 Hyundai and Genesis EVs. The current recall expands and replaces the earlier one, indicating that vehicles previously repaired under the March recall will need to have the new remedy completed.
The recurring nature of this issue highlights the challenges automakers face as they transition to electric vehicle technology. As EVs become more prevalent, ensuring their reliability and safety becomes increasingly critical for manufacturers.
Owners seeking more information about this recall can contact Genesis customer service or visit their local dealership. It's crucial for affected owners to respond promptly to recall notices to ensure their vehicles remain safe and operational.
