The NSW Government has officially kicked off the first stage of a major road upgrade project aimed at supporting the state’s growing Renewable Energy Zones (REZs). The $128 million "Port to REZ Program" will make it possible to transport oversized renewable energy equip

What the Program Involves
This first stage includes upgrades to 19 key locations, spanning from Newcastle to Elong Elong near Dubbo, unlocking efficient transport access to the Central-West Orana REZ. The upgrades will allow the smooth movement of components such as wind turbine blades and large-scale solar panels.
Funded jointly by the Minns Labor Government ($110.5 million) and the Australian Government ($18 million), this investment is expected to significantly benefit regional communities by improving road infrastructure while supporting the renewable energy transition.
Where Work Begins
Construction, led by Australian company BMD Constructions Pty Ltd, is set to begin within weeks. Around 60 jobs will be created during the works, which include:
- Pavement widening
- Drainage improvements
- New turning lanes
- Utility relocations and adjustments
Key locations for early upgrades include:
- Selwyn Street, Mayfield North
- Lonsdale Street, Jerrys Plains
- Vinegaroy Road, Cassilis
- Barneys Reef Road, Dunedoo
Many of these upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Broader Benefits for All Motorists
Beyond enabling the delivery of renewable energy infrastructure, these road improvements are set to enhance safety, reduce delays, and ease intersection congestion for all drivers.
Government Voices on the Upgrade
Minister for Energy, Penny Sharpe:
“This contract marks a key milestone in delivering road upgrades from the Hunter to the Central West. Renewable energy projects across the state require large components to be moved along our road network, and the upgrades to local roads will improve safety and comfort for all users.”
Minister for the Hunter, Yasmin Catley:
“The Port to REZ program is an important investment in our region’s future – we are building better roads that will not only benefit the community but help deliver critical infrastructure and create local jobs.”
Minister for Roads and Regional Transport, Jenny Aitchison:
“These 19 road upgrades will result in greater capacity and a safer road environment from the Port of Newcastle, through the Hunter and then into the Central West where these farms will be located.”
