The Allan Labor Government is stepping up its commitment to local road safety across Victoria, delivering over $2.5 million in grants to 38 councils as part of the Transport Accident Commission's (TAC) Local Government Grant Program (LGGP).

A Focus on Vulnerable Road Users
Announced by Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne, the latest round of the LGGP aims to reduce road trauma, particularly among pedestrians and cyclists. In 2023 alone, 48 pedestrians and 12 cyclists tragically lost their lives, while hundreds more were seriously injured and hospitalised across the state.
Supporting the Safe System Approach
All projects funded under the program are guided by the four pillars of the Safe System approach:
- Safe roads and roadsides
- Safe vehicles
- Safe speeds
- Safe road users
This framework ensures a comprehensive strategy in making roads safer for everyone.
Grant Highlights Across Victoria
Some of the key projects receiving funding include:
- City of Maribyrnong: Installation of portable, solar-powered speed advisory signs in Footscray to remind drivers and pedestrians of local speed limits.
- City of Stonnington: A raised pedestrian crossing to be built between the Stonnington Sports Centre and Chadstone Shopping Centre.
- Colac Otway Shire Council: Development of an infrastructure strategy to improve intersections, crosswalks, and create safer bike lanes.
These projects will play a vital role in preventing accidents and improving safety in high-risk zones.
