Motorists across Victoria are being urged to plan ahead, as major traffic disruptions are expected this weekend with the removal of a giant tower crane from the West Gate Freeway.

The 50-metre-high crane, a critical part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, has been central to constructing the outbound tunnel exit between Williamstown Road and Millers Road. After two years of lifting vital pieces of the tunnel ventilation structure, including its steel frame and cladding, the crane is now ready to be dismantled.

Traffic Impacts and Closures

From 11:59 pm on Friday, 11 April to 5:00 am on Monday, 14 April, the West Gate Freeway outbound will be reduced to just two lanes between Williamstown Road and Millers Road.

In addition:

  • All lanes outbound will be closed overnight on Friday and Sunday between Williamstown Road and Millers Road.
  • A 450-tonne crane will be assembled and dismantled during these closures to assist with removing the tower crane.
  • The Williamstown Road outbound entry ramp will also be closed for the entire weekend.

Authorities are warning drivers to avoid the West Gate Bridge where possible and expect significant delays of up to an hour.

Why the Work Is Happening

The crane has played a major role in the tunnel's ventilation structure and its removal marks another step towards completing the West Gate Tunnel Project, which is set to finish by the end of 2025.

Recent months have seen significant progress, with crews resurfacing sections of the freeway, installing barriers, and finalising the layout for the inbound express lanes.
