The Cook Government is stepping up to ease financial pressure on Western Australian families by rolling out the 2025 WA Student Assistance Payment. This initiative is set to provide hundreds of dollars in support to parents of school-aged children, starting from the beginning of Term 2.

WA’s Bold Move: Lower Speed Limits Coming
WA lowers speed limits on hundreds of roads in a bold move to cut crashes and save lives after the state’s rising road toll.

What the Payment Offers

As part of an $89 million election commitment, the program offers:

  • $250 for every secondary school student
  • $150 for each primary or kindergarten student

The payment aims to help cover everyday school essentials including:

  • School uniforms
  • Shoes and bags
  • Textbooks and stationery
  • IT equipment
  • Extracurricular activities and excursions

When and How to Apply

Families can begin claiming from Monday, 28 April 2025, with applications open until Friday, 4 July 2025.

The fastest method is via the ServiceWA app, where approved claims are paid out in about a week. Alternatively, families can apply through:

  • The Department of Education website
  • Paper forms (available as needed, especially for regional communities)

Applicants must provide a student’s WA Student Number (WASN), which can be found on SmartRider cards, school reports or NAPLAN results.

New high-tech safety cameras will hit WA roads in 2025, detecting mobile phone use, seatbelt violations, and speeding to improve road safety.

Support for Regional Families

To ensure inclusivity, additional support will be given to families in regional areas. The initiative includes alternative claim options and outreach efforts to improve participation, especially in communities that missed out last year.

In 2024, nearly 400,000 students received payments, making up around 80% of eligible claims.

Government Response

Premier Roger Cook:

"My government understands the cost-of-living pressures families are feeling as a result of the global inflationary crisis, and we will continue to provide relief where we can.
As a dad from Kwinana, I know how quickly school expenses can add up, and I want to ensure every family benefits from this initiative.
We saw how important this initiative was to parents last year, when more than 400,000 families received the WA Student Assistance Payment to put towards their school costs.
I encourage eligible families to get ready to claim this latest round of the WA Student Assistance Payment, which will address cost-of-living pressures and support parents in getting their children what they need for school."
WA’s Biggest Highway Gets $1 Billion Dollars
$1B Tonkin Highway and Thomas Road upgrades set to transform WA’s south-east, easing congestion, boosting safety, and creating 4,400+ jobs.

Education Minister Sabine Winton:

"Every family wants their child to have the best education possible, and the Cook Government is committed to ensuring Western Australian students have what they need to thrive at school.
This additional payment will help ease financial pressures for families, covering essentials like books and uniforms or extracurricular needs.
There will be even more focus this year on making sure regional families access the payment and benefit from this important initiative.
By helping families, we're making sure more students have what they need to focus on their education and reach their full potential."
