Nissan has electrified the legendary R32 Skyline GT-R, unveiling an EV conversion that has sparked debates among car enthusiasts. Showcased at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, this groundbreaking project replaces the iconic twin-turbo RB26 engine with dual electric motors delivering a combined 320kW and 780Nm of torque.
Electrifying Performance
The EV conversion retains the R32’s AWD spirit but swaps its five-speed manual gearbox and ATTESA E-TS system for single-speed electric motors on each axle. The result? A torque-to-weight ratio engineered to emulate the original GT-R’s thrilling dynamics.
Despite its modern powertrain, the R32 EV weighs in at 1787kg – significantly heavier than its 1430kg petrol-powered predecessor but comparable to the R35 GT-R’s launch weight.
Enhanced Handling and Design
Nissan upgraded the R32 EV with:
- Brakes: Borrowed from the current R35 GT-R.
- Suspension: NISMO sports setup with Öhlins dampers for sharper handling.
- Wheels: 18-inch alloys inspired by the original design.
Visually, it stays true to its roots while modernizing the interior. Rear seats have been replaced with custom Recaro front seats embroidered with the “Skyline” logo. The iconic analog gauges are now replicated digitally, and a screen occupies the space where the radio once lived.
Sound and Feel: Nostalgia Reimagined
For purists lamenting the loss of the RB26’s growl, Nissan added a sound system that mimics the engine’s roar. There’s even a simulated gear-shifting experience using paddle shifters, blending nostalgia with innovation.
A One-Off Innovation
Before you rush to Nissan dealerships, there’s a catch: the R32 EV isn’t for sale. Nissan has no plans to commercialize the EV or offer conversion kits. This project, launched in 2023, serves as a testing ground for future EV advancements.
What’s Next for the GT-R Lineup?
While the R32 EV won’t hit showrooms, the Hyper Force concept hints at an electric future for the GT-R. Nissan could explore hybrid options or unleash a fully electric R36 GT-R, possibly boasting solid-state batteries and up to 1000kW of power.
Nissan’s Electrification Roadmap
By 2030, Nissan aims to roll out 27 electrified models globally, including 19 EVs. Whether the GT-R’s legacy continues with hybrid or fully electric powertrains, the R32 EV is a bold glimpse into Nissan’s vision for performance in the EV era.
