A Lamborghini driver has become the first individual to receive a fine under South Australia's new legislation requiring a special licence for ultra high-powered vehicles (UHPVs). This new rule, which came into effect on December 1, 2024, mandates that drivers of certain high-performance cars obtain a U-class licence or face significant penalties.
First Offender
The driver, a 36-year-old man, was fined $670 shortly after the new law was implemented. He was stopped by police in Adelaide for driving without a rear number plate, leading to the discovery that he did not possess the required U-class licence for his Lamborghini Huracan.
New Legislation:
The U-class licence is necessary for any vehicle with a gross vehicle mass of up to 4.5 tonnes and a power-to-weight ratio of 276 kilowatts per tonne or more.
The legislation aims to enhance road safety, especially following tragic incidents involving high-powered vehicles, including the death of 15-year-old Sophia Naith in 2019 due to a runaway Lamborghini.
Penalties for Non-Compliance:
The initial fine for driving without the appropriate licence can reach $2,500, along with six demerit points. Repeat offenders may face harsher penalties, including potential imprisonment of up to one year and fines up to $5,000.
Public Response:
Since the announcement of the U-class licence requirement, nearly 1,500 drivers have enrolled in training programs to qualify for the new licence.
Authorities are encouraging all drivers of high-performance vehicles to comply with the new regulations to avoid substantial fines and ensure safer roads.
Training Requirements:
- To obtain a U-class licence, drivers must complete an online training course that covers safe operation and risks associated with UHPVs.
- The cost for this training course is $61, and an additional fee of $20 is required for replacing the licence.
The enforcement of the U-class licence in South Australia represents a significant step towards improving road safety for high-powered vehicles. As authorities continue to monitor compliance with this new regulation, drivers are urged to familiarize themselves with the requirements and ensure they are properly licensed to operate their vehicles.
