Great news for Aussies who want a small and zippy electric car! Volkswagen has announced they will launch a brand new electric car called the Volkswagen ID.1 in 2027, and it's expected to cost around 20k euros which equates to about $33,000 Australian dollars.

Think of the ID.1 as the cool, electric cousin of older VW small cars like the Lupo and Up. These were nippy little cars perfect for city driving, and the ID.1 is set to follow in their footsteps – but with a modern electric engine!

Why is this exciting for Australia?

For many Aussies, especially those living in busy cities, a smaller car is just right. They're easy to park, cheap to run, and great for getting around town. Electric cars are also becoming more and more popular in Australia as people look for ways to save money on petrol and help the environment.

The ID.1 sounds like it could be a perfect fit for this. Volkswagen says it will be a "people's car", meaning it will be affordable for everyday families. They are building it in Europe, especially for European drivers.

What do we know so far?

  • Price: Around $AU33,000. This is a starting price, so fancier versions might cost a bit more.
  • Launch Date: 2027. It's still a few years away, so we have time to save up!
  • Size: Small, like the old VW Lupo or Up. Great for city parking and zipping through traffic.
  • Electric: Runs on electricity, so no more petrol bills!

Volkswagen will show off a sneak peek of the ID.1 very soon, in March 2025. The real car will be ready in 2027.

More Electric VWs on the way!

The ID.1 isn't the only electric car Volkswagen is working on. They are also making a slightly bigger electric car called the ID.2, which will come out a bit earlier in 2026. This one will be about the size of a VW Polo.

It looks like Volkswagen is serious about electric cars, and they are making them for all sorts of drivers, big and small. The ID.1 sounds like a fantastic option for Australians wanting to go electric without spending a fortune.
