The NSW Government is enhancing road safety and supporting truck drivers by rolling out new green reflector signs to mark safe rest areas along key freight routes. As part of an $11.9 million investment, 14 new green reflector sites have been installed to help heavy vehicle drivers identify informal rest stops, particularly in low-visibility conditions.

New Green Reflector Rest Stops in NSW
Transport for NSW has completed work on the following green reflector rest areas:
- Burley Griffin Way: 4, 8, and 10 km north of Binalong
- Lachlan Valley Way: 17 km north of Yass
- Snowy Mountains Highway: 3 km south of Bemboka
- Princes Highway: 5 km south of Cobargo
- Olympic Highway: 8 km south of Cootamundra and 5 km north of Bethungra
- Mid-Western Highway: 4 km west of Weethalle
- Newell Highway: 2 km north of Narrandera and 18 km south of Ardlethan
- Hume Highway: 4 km south of Bowning/7 km north of Yass and 10 km north of Little Billabong
- Monaro Highway: 13 km north of Cooma
These locations were selected based on industry feedback and their importance to NSW’s freight network.
How Green Reflector Signs Work
Green reflector markers are mounted on roadside guideposts and serve as a simple, yet effective tool to help truck drivers locate informal rest stops. These markers improve visibility at night and in poor weather conditions, making it easier for drivers to find a safe place to stop, rest, and check their loads.

Additional Road Safety Measures in NSW
The NSW Government is committed to improving road safety through various initiatives, including:
- Trialing average speed cameras for light vehicles in 2025
- Expanding roadside enforcement sites for mobile speed cameras (2,700 new locations added)
- Enforcing seatbelt use through mobile phone cameras
- Continuing the demerit point return trial to reward safe drivers
- Enhancing bicycle helmet safety ratings
- Closing loopholes for foreign licence conversions within six months
- Implementing recommendations to prevent demerit point fraud
- Signing the National Road Safety Data Agreement with the Commonwealth

Industry Support for Green Reflector Sites
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Jenny Aitchison, emphasized the importance of this initiative:
“Heavy vehicle drivers have told us how important green reflectors are in helping them find a safe place to stop and rest. This rollout is a practical step in ensuring the wellbeing of our truck drivers.”
Road safety advocate and Past National Road Freighters Association President Rod Hannifey also praised the initiative:
“Green reflector sites have already made a real difference out on the road. Another driver told me it had saved their life. It’s such a simple idea, but it’s already saving lives.”
Looking Ahead
The NSW Government continues to explore opportunities for additional green reflector sites across the state. Industry feedback remains a key factor in determining future locations, ensuring that truck drivers receive the support they need for safer and more efficient journeys.
