The Smart Ticketing system has officially rolled out across South East Queensland, marking a major milestone in the state's public transport network. Commuters can now tap on and off with a debit card, credit card, smartphone, smartwatch or the traditional Go Card when travelling on trains, trams, ferries, and Brisbane City Council buses.

Queensland won’t apply double demerits this Easter 2025, but repeat traffic offenders still face harsher penalties under the state’s year-round rules.

All Major Operators Now Online

The final stage of the rollout was completed with Brisbane City Council's fleet of approximately 1300 buses now equipped with Smart Ticketing technology. This makes them the 18th and final operator to join the network, ensuring seamless payment options across the entire Translink system.

The upgrade allows travellers to take full advantage of the Permanent 50 Cent Fares introduced by the LNP Government, using whatever payment method suits them best. A new reloadable smart card is also in development to complement the system.

Boosting Convenience and Accessibility

According to Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg, the Smart Ticketing expansion offers Queenslanders greater flexibility and ease of access when using public transport.

"People can now use a debit card, credit card, smartphone or smartwatch to pay for their public transport anywhere in South East Queensland," Minister Mickelberg said. "The system makes it easier than ever to access the network, and Go Cards remain available for those who prefer them."

More than 25% of travellers on activated services have already embraced the Smart Ticketing option, and that number is expected to grow.

Ending Delays and Delivering for Commuters

The rollout had been delayed by two years and exceeded its budget by $60 million under the previous government. The Crisafulli Government completed the implementation after years of setbacks.

"Labor’s era of delays and blowouts is finally over," said Minister Mickelberg. "This is a win for commuters who deserve modern, reliable and accessible public transport."

What This Means for You

  • Go Cards are still accepted, with a new reloadable smart card on the way.

How a QLD Man Lost His License Instantly
Queensland police suspended a Tesla driver’s licence on the spot after he was caught speeding at 92km/h in a 40km/h school zone, calling it “inexcusable.”

This development is part of a broader push to modernise Queensland's transport system and make it easier, faster, and more affordable to get around.
