Subaru fans, rejoice—sort of. The legendary WRX STI is making a limited comeback with the S210 Edition, an exclusive release for the Japanese market.

While it’s not the global WRX STI of the past, the S210 captures the essence of Subaru Tecnica International’s (STI) high-performance pedigree.

The S210: A Limited-Edition Powerhouse

The S210 is the ninth in STI’s series of ultra-performance WRX-based limited editions, following the acclaimed S209 from 2019. Unlike previous models, this one is based on the current-generation WRX, as there’s no new WRX STI to build on.

With only 500 units planned for production, the S210 will likely become an instant collector’s item.

Performance Upgrades

Under the hood lies a more powerful version of the WRX’s 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, now producing 221kW—a 19kW boost over the standard WRX sold in Japan. However, torque remains the same at 375Nm, a slight disappointment for those expecting more grunt.

The enhanced power comes courtesy of:

  • A retuned ECU
  • A new low-back-pressure exhaust system with a “cannonball-shaped chamber”
  • Newly developed intake and pre-turbo ducts

This makes the S210 the first STI S-series model to feature Subaru’s Performance Transmission—a reworked continuously variable transmission (CVT) tailored to handle the power increase.

Chassis Enhancements

The S210 boasts significant mechanical upgrades to match its power boost:

  • 19-inch BBS forged wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres
  • Drilled brake discs with red Brembo six-piston calipers
  • Retuned brake boosters and new pads
  • Adaptive dampers with special tuning
  • CVT fluid cooler
  • Front and rear stiffener bars

Unfortunately, the iconic adjustable centre differential from previous WRX STI models is absent.

Sleek, Aggressive Styling

The S210 exudes aggression with its wider stance—20mm broader than the standard WRX—thanks to gloss black wheel-arch cladding and STI-branded aero elements, including a front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser, and a carbon-fibre rear wing.

Gloss black finishes and STI’s signature cherry red accents adorn the grille, mirror caps, and roof antenna, elevating its sporty look.

Interior Refinements

Inside, the S210 combines luxury with performance:

  • Recaro front bucket seats with carbon-fibre backrests and nappa leather trim
  • Red contrast stitching and seat belts
  • Unique dashboard wrapping and suede-trimmed armrests
  • Black interior highlights and S210-specific badging

Availability

Subaru plans to release the S210 Edition in Japan later this year, with further details about its sales process expected by May.

A Nod to the STI Legacy

While the S210 may not bear the full WRX STI badge, it embodies the spirit of Subaru’s performance heritage. For enthusiasts eagerly awaiting a true WRX STI comeback, this limited edition is a tantalizing taste of what might be possible.

Stay tuned to Subaru Japan for more updates on the S210. For global fans, the wait for a true WRX STI revival continues, but this powerhouse offers a glimpse into what the future could hold.
