Tesla has just unveiled its most affordable Model 3 yet, and it’s generating quite the buzz!

Inside the Entry-Level Model 3

At first glance, the new entry-level Model 3 in Mexico looks strikingly similar to the base RWD model we know and love. It even features the same 18-inch ‘Photon’ wheels. But take a peek inside, and you’ll notice quite a few differences.

Gone are the multi-colour ambient lighting and the rear passenger screen that were introduced with the recent ‘Highland’ update. While you still get ambient lighting, it’s limited to a minimalist white hue. Where the rear screen used to be, you’ll now find just two USB-C outlets.

Comfort and Convenience

The interior materials have also seen a change. Leatherette upholstery has been swapped out for grey cloth, marking a first for the Model 3. Additionally, the front seats have lost their heating and ventilation functions, a feature many will surely miss.

The heated steering wheel is another casualty in this cost-cutting exercise. And the sound system? It’s now a nine-speaker setup instead of the 17-speaker extravaganza, losing an amplifier and two subwoofers in the process.

Finally, the acoustic glass, which once adorned all windows, is now reserved only for the front ones.

Price Point

The new stripped-down Model 3 is priced at 749,000 pesos, making it 50,000 pesos (~A$4000) cheaper than the previous base model. After a simple currency conversion, that price is roughly A$60,000. In comparison, the better-equipped Australian-market RWD costs just $54,900 before on-road costs.

In the US, this basic Model 3 is more expensive than its US$38,990 (A$58,420) counterpart, clocking in at around US$40,000 (A$59,935). This is still quite a way off from Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s oft-repeated promise of a US$25,000 (A$37,460) vehicle.

What’s Next for Tesla?

There’s speculation that the more affordable Tesla could be a version of the brand’s upcoming robotaxi. Originally slated for an earlier reveal this month, the robotaxi is now set to be unveiled on October 10.

However, the future of a ‘regular’ version of the robotaxi remains uncertain. Reports earlier this year suggested that Musk had canceled that model to focus solely on the robotaxi project.

Final Comments

So, will this stripped-down Model 3 make its way to Australia? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure: Tesla continues to innovate and surprise us with each new release. Keep an eye out for more updates, as the world of electric vehicles keeps getting more exciting!
