Unveiling 2025 Volkswagen Transporter: Electric and Hybrid Vans Set for Australian Market

The Volkswagen Transporter T7: A Game Changer on Australian Roads in 2025

The highly-anticipated T7-generation Volkswagen Transporter is set to make its Australian debut in the third quarter of 2025. Bringing a breath of fresh air to the auto industry, this model will boast battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and internal combustion diesel engine (ICE) options.

Volkswagen Australia’s product and PR communications manager, Daniel DeGasperi, shared this exciting update during the recent unveiling of the updated T-Cross SUV. He mentioned that the new Transporter will offer a broad range of powertrains, rivalling the already available local models boasting similar features.

“The new-generation Transporter will hit the Australian market around this time next year, and we can confirm today it will be offered in ICE, BEV and PHEV,” Mr DeGasperi said.

What We Know So Far About the T7 Transporter

While further details will be confirmed closer to the T7 Transporter’s arrival in the new year, here’s what we already know.

The 2025 Volkswagen Transporter and Caravelle lineup, revealed earlier this month, will be offered globally with a wide range of turbo-diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. It shares the same platform as the latest Ford Transit Custom, E-Transit Custom and Tourneo, as part of an ongoing commercial vehicle partnership between the two brands.

Various four-cylinder diesels are available in 81kW, 110kW and 125kW tunes respectively, while the petrol-electric eHybrid PHEV is good for 171kW. Volkswagen has confirmed three model grades for electric versions with 100kW, 160kW and 210kW, all featuring a 64kWh battery pack. In Europe, the EV is known as the eTransporter.

Impressive Features and Options

The TDI and eHybrid PHEV models come with front-wheel drive as standard, while 4Motion all-wheel drive is available for the 110kW and 125kW TDI variants. The EV models will be rear-wheel drive only, with an all-wheel drive version planned for future release.

The T7 Transporter is not just about power; it also offers a variety of body styles, including three Transporter variants (Kombi, panel van and dropside), as well as a Caravelle nine-seat people mover.

For those with a taste for ruggedness, the T7 range includes the PanAmericana, a version designed for off-road expeditions. It comes in both the panel van and Caravelle people mover body styles and features all-terrain exterior trims, grained bumpers and a painted radiator grille.

Size, Space and Load Capacity

The new-generation T7 Transporter van is 146mm longer and 128mm wider than its T6.1-generation predecessor, providing an extended load compartment. An optional 400mm wheelbase extension is also available.

Vehicles with the standard wheelbase now have a stowage volume of 5.8m3, while long wheelbase and high roof examples can accommodate up to 9.0m3. The maximum payload has increased to 1.33 tonnes, and braked towing capacity has risen from 2500kg to 2800kg, depending on the variant.

As we await the arrival of the T7 Transporter in Australia, one thing is certain: the Volkswagen Transporter continues to revolutionize the auto industry with its innovative design, power and flexibility. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates on this game-changing model!
