The Albanese Labor Government, in partnership with the Allan Labor Government, has announced a fresh round of infrastructure funding under the $1.2 billion Road Blitz, with three new projects confirmed across Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

The latest funding round commits $38.5 million to improve road safety, cut congestion, and prepare growing communities for future demand. These projects will directly benefit thousands of commuters, reducing travel times and improving access for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
What’s Being Funded?
The three targeted projects include:
- $25 million for planning and development at the Five-Ways intersection, Warrandyte South
- $10 million for planning upgrades at High Street Road and Mowbray Drive, Wantirna South
- $3.5 million towards planning improvements at the Maroondah Highway and Yarra Road intersection, Croydon North
Five-Ways Intersection, Warrandyte South
The complex Five-Ways intersection at Ringwood-Warrandyte Road, Croydon Road, Husseys Lane and Brumbys Road is notorious for congestion and crashes. With 8,000 vehicles passing through daily and five crashes reported between 2020 and 2024, this $25 million planning investment aims to deliver a safer, more efficient design.

High Street Road and Mowbray Drive, Wantirna South
In Melbourne’s southeast, $10 million will go toward early design work for a signalised T-intersection, improving safety for all road users and enhancing access to the Blind Creek Trail for local pedestrians and cyclists.
Maroondah Highway and Yarra Road, Croydon North
With five schools nearby, this intersection sees significant traffic during school hours. The $3.5 million planning package will investigate ways to reduce congestion, enhance pedestrian access, and improve overall road safety.
A Long-Term Commitment to Victorian Roads
These projects are part of the broader $1.2 billion Road Blitz, including $1 billion from the Australian Government and $200 million from the Victorian Government, following an earlier state-led road blitz worth nearly $1 billion.
What Leaders Are Saying
Catherine King, Federal Minister for Infrastructure:
“We’re fixing these notorious choke points and planning future road improvements to cater for our growing suburbs.”
Gabrielle Williams, Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure:
“We are getting on delivering vital road upgrades across wider Melbourne that will provide safer and faster journeys for motorists.”
Mary Doyle, Federal Member for Aston:
“As a local who drives through this intersection regularly, I know building traffic signals will potentially save the lives of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.”

Matt Gregg, Federal Labor Candidate for Deakin:
“Planning improvements at this intersection will improve road safety, ease congestion and make it easier for pedestrians in Croydon North to get across the road.”
Gabriel Ng, Federal Labor Candidate for Menzies:
“That’s why I'm proud that a re-elected Albanese Government will upgrade the Five Ways Intersection to reduce congestion and get people home safely.”
Sonja Terpstra, Victorian Member for Northern Metropolitan:
“These upgrades will change the way people move for the better – cutting congestion and delivering safer journeys for motorists.”
These upgrades aim to support Melbourne’s continued growth while making travel faster and safer for communities in the east and southeast. Further updates on construction timelines will follow as planning progresses.
