Volvo is gearing up for the unveiling of its highly anticipated ES90 electric sedan, scheduled for March 5. As the Swedish automaker continues to make strides in the electric vehicle (EV) market, the ES90 is positioned to compete with luxury electric sedans like the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE. With a remarkable claimed driving range of 700km on the WLTP cycle, the ES90 is set to redefine expectations for electric luxury sedans.
Exceptional Range and Competitive Edge
The ES90’s impressive range of 700km significantly surpasses that of its predecessor, the EX90 electric SUV, which offers a range of 570km. This makes the ES90 not only a more practical choice for long-distance travel but also a formidable competitor against other luxury EVs.

For instance, the BMW i5 boasts a maximum range of up to 627km, while the Mercedes-Benz EQE offers up to 626km. The ES90’s extended range positions it as a leader in its segment, appealing to consumers who prioritize both performance and convenience.
Advanced 800-Volt Architecture
One of the standout features of the Volvo ES90 is its 800-volt architecture, marking a significant advancement for the brand.
While based on the same SPA2 platform as the EX90—which utilizes a 400-volt system—the switch to an 800-volt architecture allows for higher charging rates and improved efficiency. This means that drivers can expect faster charging times and greater flexibility when it comes to long journeys.
Rapid Charging Capabilities

Volvo claims that the ES90 can gain an impressive 300km of range in just 10 minutes when connected to a 350kW DC fast charger. This rapid charging capability is a game-changer for EV owners, making it easier to refuel during long trips. Furthermore, a full charge from 10% to 80% can be achieved in approximately 20 minutes, thanks to its 106kWh net capacity battery. In comparison, the EX90's larger 111kWh gross capacity battery charges at up to 250kW, highlighting the advancements made in the ES90.
Sustainability at Its Core
Volvo has long been committed to sustainability, and the ES90 is no exception.

The new sedan incorporates innovative materials and design philosophies aimed at reducing its environmental impact. Notably, approximately 29% of recycled aluminum, 18% recycled steel, and 16% recycled polymers and bio-based materials are utilized in its construction. This commitment not only enhances sustainability but also contributes to weight savings, improving overall efficiency.
Battery Passport Initiative
As part of its sustainability efforts, Volvo will introduce a "battery passport" with the ES90. This initiative—required in Europe starting in early 2027—will track essential raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite used in battery production. Additionally, it will provide transparency regarding the battery's CO2 footprint throughout its lifecycle. This level of accountability reflects Volvo's dedication to ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility.
Dimensions and Configurations
Recent leaks have revealed that the ES90 measures 4990mm in length, 1945mm in width, and 1547mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3102mm. These dimensions place it firmly within the mid-to-large luxury sedan category, comparable to traditional petrol-powered vehicles like the Volvo S90, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The ES90 will be available in both single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations, catering to diverse consumer preferences.

Expanding Volvo's EV Lineup
The introduction of the ES90 marks another significant step in Volvo's expanding EV lineup.

Alongside models such as the compact EX30 and EX40 (formerly known as XC40 Recharge), as well as the flagship EX90 SUV, Volvo is committed to electrifying its entire portfolio. The upcoming EX60 will serve as an electric counterpart to the popular XC60 SUV, while two additional models based on the newer SPA3 platform are also on the horizon.

Revised Electrification Goals
Volvo has recently adjusted its electrification strategy, now aiming for 90-100% electrified vehicle sales (including plug-in hybrids) by 2030. This marks a shift from their initial target of exclusively selling EVs by that year. The revised goals reflect an understanding of market dynamics while still emphasizing a commitment to sustainable mobility.
A Bold Step Forward for Volvo
As Volvo prepares for the launch of the ES90 electric sedan, it stands at the forefront of innovation in luxury electric vehicles. With its impressive range, advanced charging capabilities, sustainable materials usage, and commitment to transparency through initiatives like the battery passport, the ES90 promises to deliver an exceptional driving experience while addressing environmental concerns.

The upcoming sedan not only showcases Volvo's engineering prowess but also reinforces its position as a leader in sustainable automotive practices. As consumers increasingly seek out electric alternatives without compromising on luxury or performance, the ES90 is poised to make a significant impact in an evolving market.
