Western Australian motorists can now bring a slice of the past into the present with the launch of the Nostalgia number plate series, available to purchase from 12 noon today at plateswa.com for $289.

WA Double Demerit Points for Easter 2025
Double demerits are in force across WA this Easter from April 17–21, 2025. Learn which offences apply, penalty details, and how to stay safe on the roads.

The long-anticipated optional plate series features the iconic black on yellow and black on white designs originally issued in WA between 1978 and 1997. These styles became synonymous with vehicles across the state during those years and are now being revived in response to strong public demand.

Over 900 Expressions of Interest Submitted

Since expressions of interest opened in January 2025, the initiative has attracted significant attention, with 916 EOIs submitted by WA drivers keen to secure their favourite plate combinations.

One particularly enthusiastic driver ordered 17 different Nostalgia plates, while the most requested combination—8BB888—was already in use and therefore unavailable for new issue.

Why It Matters

The Nostalgia series gives drivers the chance to:

  • Recreate meaningful memories, such as their first car or a family vehicle
  • Celebrate WA motoring heritage
  • Stand out on the road with a vintage look
  • Replace original state plates with optional ones that can be remade if lost, stolen, or damaged

Original State plates from that era cannot be replaced if lost. The optional Nostalgia series solves this issue and also allows for plates to be traded or displayed proudly.

WA’s New Safety Cameras Now Active for Drivers
New high-tech safety cameras will hit WA roads in 2025, detecting mobile phone use, seatbelt violations, and speeding to improve road safety.

How to Order

Motorists can visit www.plateswa.com to:

  • Search available combinations
  • Order a new Nostalgia plate
  • Convert an existing State plate (matching format) to an optional plate

All Nostalgia plates are priced at $289, and availability is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ministerial Support

Jessica Stojkovski, Minister Assisting the Transport Minister, welcomed the launch:

"Western Australian drivers can now enjoy a slice of history, winding back the clock to represent a special time in your life."

"Whether it was the plate of your first car, your parents' or grandparents' car, or a number relating to your classic car, you can soak up the memories and display it proudly."

"Western Australians love to make our vehicles stand out, and this is the perfect opportunity to be a little different to other vehicles on the road."

The launch of the Nostalgia plate series not only reflects a growing appreciation for local motoring history but also provides a fun and functional way for WA drivers to personalise their vehicles in 2025 and beyond.
